Hops: Beyond their use in brewing beer, Hops (Humulus lupulus) have been used for centuries in European herbalism as a powerful sedative and nervine herb. I value Hops for their ability to quiet a restless mind and promote deep, restorative sleep. The bitter compounds and essential oils in Hops have a calming effect on the nervous system, traditionally used for insomnia, anxiety, and nervous tension. What I love about Hops is their particular affinity for the type of sleeplessness that comes from an overactive mind - when thoughts won't stop spinning. Hops gently lull the nervous system into a state of relaxation, preparing the body for rest.

Valerian: Perhaps the most well-known herbal sedative in Western herbalism, Valerian root has been used since ancient Greek and Roman times to promote sleep and calm nervous disorders. I think of Valerian as the anchor of this formula - it's traditionally indicated for both difficulty falling asleep and for restless, interrupted sleep. Valerian works by increasing GABA activity in the brain, the neurotransmitter responsible for calming neural activity. While its earthy aroma might surprise you, its effectiveness is undeniable. Traditionally used for insomnia, anxiety, nervous exhaustion, and stress-related tension, Valerian helps the body surrender into deep, peaceful sleep. * on rare occasions, valerian can have the opposite ie more stimulating effect, please consult with me if you are unsure or are sensitive or haven’t had valerian before.

Skullcap: A gentle yet powerful nervine herb from North American traditional medicine, Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) has been used for generations to calm nervous tension and ease an overworked mind. What I appreciate about Skullcap is its dual action - it both calms anxiety and helps quiet mental chatter, making it perfect for those whose sleep struggles stem from worry or an inability to switch off. Traditionally used for nervous exhaustion, anxiety, and stress-related insomnia, Skullcap is particularly valuable for people who feel "tired but wired" - exhausted yet unable to settle. It's the herb of mental peace.

Passionflower: With its strikingly beautiful flower and fascinating history, Passionflower has been used in traditional medicine from South America to Europe for its calming and sedative properties. I value Passionflower for its gentle yet effective action - it's traditionally indicated for anxiety-driven insomnia, circular thinking, and nervous restlessness. Passionflower helps ease the transition from wakefulness to sleep, particularly when anxiety or worry keeps the mind alert. It's also traditionally used for muscle tension and nervous spasms, helping the body physically relax into sleep. Passionflower brings a sense of surrender and letting go - essential for deep rest.

Chamomile: Gentle, nurturing, and universally beloved, Chamomile has been used for thousands of years across cultures as a calming herb for both body and mind. While many know Chamomile as a soothing tea, its inclusion in this formula provides important anti-anxiety and mild sedative properties. I think of Chamomile as the comforting embrace in this blend - it soothes nervous tension, eases digestive discomfort that might interfere with sleep, and brings a sense of calm safety to the nervous system. Traditionally used for restlessness, anxiety, and stress-related insomnia, particularly in children, Chamomile's gentle nature makes it perfect for regular use without grogginess or dependency. contraindicated for those with allergies to the Asteraceae family ie. ragweed, daisy, echinacea etc.

The Synergy: This formula represents the wisdom of traditional sleep herbalism - combining multiple nervine and sedative herbs to address the different aspects of sleeplessness. Valerian and Hops provide the deep sedative action, helping you fall asleep and stay asleep. Skullcap and Passionflower quiet the anxious mind and ease the "tired but wired" feeling. Chamomile soothes and comforts, reducing the stress response that keeps us alert. Together, these herbs work synergistically to support the body's natural sleep cycle - not by forcing sleep, but by creating the conditions for rest. This is sleep support that works with your body, promoting natural, restorative sleep without morning grogginess. It's also wonderfully effective for daytime anxiety when used in smaller doses - nature's gentle answer to our modern nervous system overwhelm.
