Naturopathy

Naturopathy uses a whole-body integrative treatment approach, combining clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, dietary discussion, and lifestyle education to support the body’s inherent ability to heal.

Naturopathy is deeply rooted in science and philosophy, focusing on finding and treating (changing) underlying causes that may be affecting vitality and wellbeing, rather than simply treating or masking superficial symptoms. Emma works alongside general practitioners and allied health professionals to support the varying health needs of her clients.

What is Naturopathy?

Modern medical research is continually providing greater insight into the body’s biochemistry and nutritional pathways.

As a result, we have a better understanding of how herbal and nutritional medicine can treat the cause of disease as well as the symptoms. Our goal is to provide the most effective treatment with minimal side-effects and toxicity using herbal and nutritional medicine wherever possible.  However, we are aware of the vital role that mainstream medicine can play in treating and managing chronic and life-threatening illnesses. It also provides a range of tools and techniques which can help diagnose and understand disease states.

Naturopathy can help to support individuals with a wide range of different health concerns, such as (but not limited to) digestive discomfort, hormone imbalances, dietary intolerances, sports performance, metabolic health, anxiety, depression, fatigue or ‘burn-out’, chronic pain, and immune dysfunction. Naturopathy can also assist you if you are feeling well and would like to improve some areas of your life or help to reach your full potential. Our primary focus is not only on treating existing conditions but in maintaining health, achieving optimal wellness and preventing disease.

Clinical nutrition is a holistic approach to health and wellness, using food as medicine and professional-quality, TGA approved nutritional supplements to support health needs. Your clinician will also observe your individual nutrient adequacy or deficiencies, dietary behaviours, and lifestyle habits. At Yin and Tonic we are passionate about wholefood nutrition and encouraging health through delicious wholefoods and fresh produce first.

Herbal medicine has been used for centuries to support health and wellbeing, as well as targeting specific conditions or illnesses. Each bottle formulated by Emma is unique for your individual health needs and goals. Herbal medicine in the form of a liquid tincture or herbal tea may be prescribed during your consultation, please advise us if you have any allergies to any plants/flowers or avoid alcohol.

Traditional Naturopathic Principles.

The Healing Power of Nature (vis medicatrix naturae)

A naturopath works under the premise that the body has the capacity to heal itself when given the right conditions.

Treat the whole Person (tolle totum)

Naturopaths treat holistically (viewing the whole rather than specific parts). They recognise that disease has different causes in different people and is caused by a unique combination of factors (physiological, emotional, psychological, environmental, social, biochemical). Therefore, the treatment approach is different in each person and treatment is tailored to you.

Identify and Treat the Cause (primum non nocere)

By taking all these factors into consideration, the Naturopath aims to treat the cause of the problem, not just the symptoms alone.

Health Promotion & Disease Prevention

Naturopaths focus on health and wellness rather than treating the disease only. Treating holistically and identifying and removing obstacles to the body's healing allows the body to return itself to homeostasis/health.

For instance, if you get frequent infections, instead of only targeting the virus or bacteria and suppressing symptoms, we work with the body; for example, by enhancing immune system function to allow the body to fight the infection itself and to prevent further infections.

First do no Harm (primum non nocere)

A naturopath chooses the most gentle and non-invasive treatments first to achieve the desired outcome for each individual patient.

Naturopathic Practitioner as Teacher (docere)

A naturopath works collaboratively with the patient to realise their health goals. This is achieved by education, motivation, and support. You are an active member in the process. Education is Empowerment. Knowledge helps you to sustain a healthy, wholesome lifestyle and to make conscious choices.
