Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
Numerous legends surrounding Reishi mushroom provide a historical record that extends over thousands of years. Reishi was listed among the superior tonics (shang pin) in the first Chinese materia medica, the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing. Superior herbal tonics were among the most highly regarded of all medicines as they corresponded to heaven and were considered to prolong life, prevent ageing, boost qi (vital energy), strengthen cardiac function, improve memory, and make the body light and more limber. Reishi was listed as the most respected out of the 120 superior tonics mentioned. Currently, Reishi is one of the most widely researched botanicals in Asia and has many therapeutic applications. Numerous pharmacological studies have been conducted, primarily evaluating the polysaccharide and triterpene constituents. Most of the reported activity of Reishi has centred on the immunomodulating, cardiovascular-regulating, hypoglycaemic, and hepatoprotective effects of the mushroom. Reishi is especially indicated where there is immune dysregulation and fatigue due to chronic disease.
Known as ‘The 10,000 year-old immortality mushroom’, Reishi is traditionally used to support overall vitality and wellbeing. Researchers highlight longevity benefits due to its richness in proteins, such as lysine, a support in responding to stress and inflammation, and leucine, known to stimulate muscle repair and hormone regulation. Reishi has been widely studied for its ability to enhance the immunity response through increasing white blood cell activity.
As a well-regarded adaptogen, studies show that Reishi mushroom encourages energy and vitality without stimulating the nervous system and adrenal glands (unlike caffeine). In turn, Reishi has demonstrated benefits in patterning prolonged sleep through reducing sleep latency and inhibiting irregular waking.
