Basic Jamu Recipe

Jamu (Indonesian Turmeric Elixir)

Ingredients (makes 4 servings):

  • 1 thumb-sized piece turmeric, grated (or 1 tbsp powder)

  • 1 thumb-sized piece ginger, grated

  • Juice of 1 lemon and/ or ½ orange

  • 2–3 tbsp raw, local honey

  • 3 cups water

  • Pinch of black pepper

  • Optional: cinnamon stick, 1 chilli.

Instructions:

  1. Blend turmeric and ginger with 1 cup water until smooth.

  2. Strain through cheesecloth or fine sieve into a saucepan. (beware - it will stain your sieve!)

  3. Add remaining water, pepper, and extras as desired.

  4. Heat gently (do not boil) for 5–10 minutes

  5. Allow to cool, add lemon juice and honey to help retain vit C and medicinal honey qualities)

  6. Serve warm* or chilled. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days. *warm gently, do not boil
